FAQ page

What sets Revive Therapeutic Massage apart from the other competitors?
What separates me apart from the other therapists is the extremely fast results I get through the muscle release technique I work with.  I do more of a clinical type of session which follows the bodies pain pattern, resulting in faster pain reduction.  You do not suffer through any pain during the session, making the experience much more enjoyable.  I also pass along the knowledge of how to live everyday pain free to you so that you can learn to help yourself.  I have also received extensive amounts of training in many different areas that most other therapists have not.

Do you deal with all types of injuries?
I work with muscular injuries due to over-use, over-work, and/or trauma.  Injuries due to surgery are a little different, but I do work with them.

What kind of results should I expect?
The treatment I perform works best if you are willing to fully commit to the recovery process.  Through the massage sessions and performing the at-home stretches that I will teach you, you will be on you way to living and moving pain free.

How long will the effects from the massage session last?
The length of the effects from each massage session depends on each individual injury.  At first, the effects will be short term.  However, as you continue with your sessions the effects will begin to last longer. The amount of stretching you do on your time will greatly effect your outcome.  What everyone begins to realize is that I am not the one doing all the healing.  It is actually your body doing all the work.  I am merely the one that is guiding you along your path to living and moving pain free.  The sooner you realize this, the sooner the healing will occur.

Do I need to take my clothes off?
That all depends on the treatment you are receiving.  Swedish Massage sessions require you to undress.  You will be under a cover and the only part of the body that will be exposed will be the part I will be working on.  If you are receiving a Muscle Release Technique session then I recommend that women wear shorts and a sports bra and men wear shorts.  You want to feel comfortable since we will be moving around a lot to follow your pain pattern.

What is the best frequency of treatment?
This will vary, so here are some guidelines to help.  If you are seeking massage treatment for remediation from a recent injury, it is usually recommended that you come in bi-weekly or weekly depending on the severity of the pain or injury.  I recommend purchasing a three session package to get your injury on its way to being pain free. Remember, I will teach you everything you need to know to live and move pain free, so your end result also depends on how often you stretch and stay aware of your body.  For therapeutic treatments most people find that once a month suits their needs, but some come more frequently.

How do I choose a therapist?
Since you are paying for this treatment, you are ultimately in control.  A therapist should be happy to explain his/her session process and what they are hoping to achieve.  Not all therapists are forthcoming with this information and you may have to ask, but you should expect a satisfactory reply.  Always keep in mind that private therapists are employed by you to give you the therapy that you are paying for.  The easiest way to find a good therapist is through a recommendation from someone who has been to see the therapist and was happy with the treatment they received.

Will therapy hurt?
No.  I work with a zero pain tolerance.  If at any time during your session you experience any pain we will adjust the treatment so you won't feel any.  As a defense, the body tightens up to protect itself when it feels pain, in this case you will not achieve mazimum resluts since I would have to work against the body.  You need to be open during your session and let me know how you are feeling, this way your treatment will be a lot more enjoyable and productive.  The old saying, "No pain, no gain", is not relevant to the massage therapy treatments you would receive.  Remember that it is your physical condition or injury that is painful, not the treatment.  You should feel better at the end of each treatment and the treatments will become more comfortable as your injury improves.  After a session you may feel some mild discomfort or muscle soreness for a few days until your body readjusts and heals itself.

Can massage help reduce stress levels?
According to medical studies anything that helps you relax will reduce your stress levels and massage is one of the most relaxing therapies you can receive.  Many turn to massage to manage day to day stress.  Massage therapy treats the problem holistically.  Without using suppression chemicals to slow you down, massage therapists attempt to treat the whole person and try to help your body regain homeostasis, achieving a balance between the various systems of your body to allow natural healing to occur.

Is it safe to receive massage during pregnancy?
Not only is it safe, it is also very beneficial and comforting.  Massage therapy can be received throughout the entire nine month pregnancy term.  If you are experiencing complications during pregnancy, discuss your condition with your doctor or midwife first.  It is not recommended that you use or allow anyone to apply any pure essential oils (aromatherapy oils) on you in the first three months of your pregnancy.  If oils are used, they should be mild ones like Lavender oil.

Do massage therapists have a Code of Ethics?
Yes, massage therapists adhere to the following code:

-We accept all clients without discrimination.
-We acknowledge the confidential nature of the professional relationship with a client and respect each client's right to privacy.
-We practice only the modalities in which we have been professionally trained and certified.

-We maintain a safe, clean, and professional environment.

Are there different techniques in massage?
Yes, there are many different types of massage techniques.  Swedish massage is the technique most widely known by massage therapists, but others are also trained in Sports massage, Aromatherapy massage, Shiatsu, Deep Tissue massage, Thai massage or techniques named for their developer such as Upledger, Heller Work and Feldenkrais.

How much of my body will be massaged?
When a client is seeking treatment for a specific injury or condition, the entire session may focus on a single area. There may also be a need to treat body areas that are adversely affected by injuries, such as when a sprained ankle causes the opposite leg to bear all the body's weight and stress of walking.  For relaxation massages, the client and therapist should discuss and agree upon the areas to be massaged.  A "full body massage" usually includes the back, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, legs, feet, face, chest (above breasts for women), abdomen and hips. If being massaged in certain areas causes you to feel uncomfortable, you should inform your therapist and they will adjust the massage accordingly. You should never accept a touch that feels wrong in any way or feel pressured to offer an explanation for such sensitivity.

Can I bring someone along?
Contact your therapist in advance to determine if it is fully acceptable to bring someone else with you.  The person may be in the room during your treatment or may wait outside the room.  In order to assure that you receive the full benefit and relaxation from your treatment, the person present must remain quiet and unobtrusive during your treatment.  Children are usually not permitted as guests.

What studies have been done on massage therapy?
Massage has been studied for its use with premature infants, adults who have recently experienced a heart attack or stroke, athletes who desire to increase their athletic performance and shorten recuperation time, victims of sexual abuse, grieving patients and those who have lost limbs or experience unusual pains.  Currently, the effects of massage are being studied for its use in family relations and in dealing with the separation felt when children become teenagers.
